Calcot has a very special place in my heart. I grew up in Bath and spent most of my childhood in the Playzone here (still the best kids club I’ve ever known). There’s a real sense of ‘home away from home’ at Calcot, with that relaxed luxury vibe that makes you feel instantly at ease. These days, I still find myself escaping London to work from the Grain Store, their new wellness and co-working space. The team at Calcot are brilliant and it always makes me smile that Sadie, who looked after me as a baby, still comes and says hello to me almost thirty years later!

The Setting at Calcot & Spa

Set in the middle of 220 acres of Cotswold countryside, Calcot is everything you want from a country escape. Think crackling fires, cosy lounges, and big squishy sofas you’ll struggle to get out of. It’s the kind of place that works whether you’re here for a romantic weekend, a family break, or just some proper R&R. It feels stylish but never stuffy, with that easy-going charm the Cotswolds does so well. Plus, you’ve got endless walks on your doorstep and the pretty market town of Tetbury just down the road if you fancy a wander.

Calcot also has two sister properties worth knowing about — The Painswick, a charming little bolthole just down the road, and the Lord Crewe Arms up in Northumberland if you ever find yourself that far north.

Spa & Wellness at Calcot & Spa

The spa at Calcot has always been a standout, but the recent refresh has really taken it up a notch. There’s a large indoor pool, a sauna, steam room, and my favourite spot — the outdoor hot tub, tucked next to a wood-burning fire that’s lit all year round. It’s especially magical in the winter when the garden is covered in snow but the water’s still steaming hot.

The treatment menu is just as good as you’d expect, with everything from proper deep tissue massages to relaxing facials that leave you feeling like you’ve actually had a break.

Then there’s the Grain Store — their new wellness and fitness space. It’s easily one of the best hotel gyms around, fully kitted out with Technogym equipment, a spin studio, and a dedicated Pilates studio. They run daily classes covering everything from strength and conditioning to yoga and barre. It has the feel of a boutique members club rather than a hotel gym, which probably explains why it’s so popular with locals too.

Rooms & Suites at Calcot & Spa

Food-wise, Calcot keeps things simple but really well done. The Brasserie is the main restaurant — it’s relaxed, buzzy, and serves all the crowd-pleasers, from beautifully cooked steaks to seasonal fish dishes and hearty pasta. Keep an eye out for the Vincisgrassi — a rich, indulgent lasagne-style dish from the Marche region of Italy — and the cheese soufflé, both are absolute standouts.

Then there’s The Hive, which is a more casual café by day and a cocktail spot by night. Great for coffee, lunch, or a glass of wine in the evening when you don’t fancy a full sit-down dinner.

If you’re here with kids, they’ve got that covered too with dedicated children’s menus and earlier dining options — plus the staff are brilliant at making everyone feel welcome, which isn’t always the case in hotels this smart.

What to do at Calcot & Spa

If you can drag yourself away from the spa, there’s loads to do without even leaving the grounds. There are bikes to borrow, woodland trails to explore, tennis courts, disc golf, and plenty of space for kids to run wild. It’s the kind of place where you can spend the morning being active and the afternoon horizontal by the pool.

For families, the Playbarn is a total game changer — Ofsted-registered, fully staffed, and genuinely brilliant. There’s also The Mez for older kids and teens, with games, music, and space to hang out without having to be glued to their parents.

Beyond the hotel, you’ve got Tetbury just down the road, Westonbirt Arboretum for some of the best walks in the area, and all the charm of the Cotswolds to explore — picture-perfect villages, proper pubs, and antique shops you never knew you needed to visit.

Whether you’re after a proper countryside switch-off, a spa weekend with friends, or a family escape where everyone’s entertained, Calcot just gets it right. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been back, and it never disappoints.

Entry level rooms at Calcot start from around £350 per night, but rates climb quickly during weekends and school holidays.

If you’re thinking of heading to the Cotswolds and fancy a few nights here, just get in touch — I’d be happy to help you plan the perfect escape.
