Private Iceland Must See Tour

Iceland is one of those destinations that feels genuinely different from anywhere else. The landscapes are raw, dramatic and constantly shifting, with glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls and black sand beaches shaping almost every day of the journey.

This private Iceland itinerary is designed as a comprehensive introduction to the country’s most iconic regions. Travelling with a dedicated driver-guide throughout, the experience is fluid and responsive, allowing for spontaneity while still covering Iceland’s essential highlights.

Day 1: Arrival and Reykjavík

Stay: The Reykjavik EDITION

Your journey begins with arrival into Keflavík Airport, where a private driver meets you for the transfer into Reykjavík.

Reykjavík is compact, colourful and easy to navigate. While small by capital city standards, it offers an engaging introduction to Icelandic culture, design and cuisine. Time here is best spent exploring on foot, whether visiting Hallgrímskirkja, browsing boutiques, or settling into one of the city’s excellent restaurants.

This first day is intentionally gentle, allowing time to recover from travel before heading into Iceland’s more dramatic landscapes.

Day 2: South Coast Highlights

Stay: Hótel Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Hotel

Leaving Reykjavík with your private guide, the scenery changes quickly as you travel along Iceland’s celebrated South Coast.

Waterfalls define much of this region. Seljalandsfoss offers the rare opportunity to walk behind a curtain of water, while Skógafoss impresses through sheer scale and force. Further along the coast, Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach presents a stark contrast, with basalt columns, crashing Atlantic waves and volcanic sands creating one of Iceland’s most recognisable landscapes.

As you continue east, glaciers begin to dominate the horizon. Staying outside the city also introduces the possibility of witnessing the Northern Lights, with your guide monitoring conditions and adapting plans where possible.

Day 3: Glacier Lagoon and Ice Caves

Stay: Hótel Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Hotel

Today centres on one of Iceland’s most extraordinary natural settings: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

Here, icebergs drift slowly through a vast glacial lake before making their way towards the sea. Along nearby Diamond Beach, fragments of ice wash ashore, scattered across black volcanic sand. Seals are frequently spotted navigating between the floating ice.

The afternoon shifts from observation to exploration. Travelling by specialised super jeep onto one of Vatnajökull’s outlet glaciers, you set out on a guided Ice Cave Adventure. Inside the glacier, deep blues, textures and formations reveal a constantly evolving world of ice and light.

Day 4: Canyon Landscapes and Black Beach Safari

Stay: Torfhús Retreat

After two immersive days in the southeast, the pace eases slightly as you begin travelling west.

A gentle hike through Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon reveals one of Iceland’s most striking geological formations, where steep, feathered ridges frame winding riverbeds. The scenery feels almost cinematic in scale.

Later, the landscape becomes more rugged and adventurous with an ATV Black Beach Safari, combining volcanic terrain, open coastal stretches and the haunting remains of Iceland’s famous plane wreck. This experience provides a completely different perspective on the South Coast’s vast, open spaces.

Day 5: Southern Highlands Exploration

Stay: Torfhús Retreat

The Southern Highlands represent Iceland at its most remote and elemental.

Unlike fixed sightseeing routes, this day is shaped by conditions. Your guide adapts the journey based on weather, visibility and seasonal access, seeking out volcanic craters, hidden waterfalls, geothermal features and vast, uninhabited expanses.

This flexibility is one of the defining advantages of private travel in Iceland. No two days in the Highlands are ever identical, and the emphasis here is on discovery rather than a checklist of sights.

Day 6: The Golden Circle

Stay: The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland

Returning towards western Iceland, the journey moves through the celebrated Golden Circle.

Gullfoss showcases raw power, with glacial water plunging into a dramatic canyon. Nearby, the geothermal fields of Geysir introduce Iceland’s volcanic energy through erupting geysers and steaming vents.

Lunch at Friðheimar Tomato Greenhouse offers an unexpected contrast. Dining among rows of growing tomatoes, the experience is both distinctive and uniquely Icelandic.

The day concludes at Þingvellir National Park, a site of both geological and historical significance. Here, tectonic plates visibly pull apart, while the landscape also marks the birthplace of Iceland’s ancient parliament.

Day 7: Lava Tunnels and the Reykjanes Peninsula

Stay: The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland

Your final full day explores the volcanic landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Descending into one of Iceland’s longest lava tunnels, you walk through the preserved interior of a volcanic eruption, tracing the path carved by flowing magma thousands of years ago.

Above ground, geothermal fields, cratered terrain and vast lava plains reinforce Iceland’s deep connection to volcanic forces. The experience concludes with time at the Blue Lagoon, where mineral-rich geothermal waters provide a final moment of relaxation.

Day 8: Departure

A private transfer returns you to Keflavík Airport, marking the end of your Iceland adventure.

A Journey Defined by Landscape

This itinerary provides a carefully balanced introduction to Iceland’s defining contrasts. Glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic terrain and geothermal landscapes combine to create a journey that feels both immersive and constantly varied.

This itinerary costs from £8,500 per person, including accommodation, private guiding, transfers and selected experiences. Final pricing will depend on travel dates, accommodation preferences and seasonal conditions.
