Spain: My Favourite Luxury Hotels

Spain is one of those destinations that quietly overdelivers.

Beyond the obvious clichés sits a country with extraordinary variety: island escapes that feel properly remote, city hotels that rival anywhere in Europe, and resorts that genuinely justify the hype. The challenge with Spain has never been a lack of choice, but knowing which hotels are actually worth your time.

These are the properties I return to, recommend repeatedly, and trust with my clients.

Mallorca

Cap Rocat

A former military fortress turned ultra-exclusive luxury hotel. This place feels completely removed from everyday life, perched into the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Palma. The most memorable rooms are the Sentinels - built right into the cliffside with massive private terraces, heated saltwater pools and uninterrupted 180-degree sea views. If privacy and scenery matter, this is one of Spain’s most singular hotel experiences.

Four Seasons Formentor

The 2025 Four Seasons opening everyone’s talking about. Formentor’s remote location is its biggest strength, not a drawback. Arrival is an experience in itself, either via a stunning drive through the mountains or by boat transfer out to Port de Pollença. It works brilliantly for families in the school holidays, and outside peak periods it becomes a quietly romantic hideaway for couples.

Son Bunyola

One of Mallorca’s most underrated luxury properties. Super remote, but that’s the point - the drive over the mountains to the private driveway sets the tone from the first minute. Rooms and suites are beautifully considered, and the larger villa offerings make this a fantastic option for families or groups who want space without sacrificing service.

Barcelona

Mandarin Oriental Barcelona

Set on Passeig de Gràcia, you’re steps from the city’s best shopping and iconic architecture. Interiors by Patricia Urquiola feel contemporary without being cold, and the rooms and suites are among the most luxurious in the city. Dining includes two-Michelin-starred Moments, casual Blanc and the atmospheric Banker’s Bar. The spa is calm and restorative - a perfect base from which to explore Barcelona.

Hotel Arts Barcelona

A heavyweight player in Barcelona’s luxury scene. Perched on the waterfront with sweeping sea views and home to two outdoor pools, this property does big-hotel scale very well. Enoteca by Paco Pérez (two Michelin stars) is a destination restaurant in its own right, and the art woven through the hotel gives it real character. Note: renovations are ongoing through September 2026, with some indoor and outdoor areas partially closed.

Marbella & The Costa del Sol

Finca Cortesin

One of my favourite hotels in Spain, full stop. The indoor and outdoor pools are two of the most beautiful you’ll find anywhere, and the location outside Marbella gives you exclusivity without feeling cut off. It has its own beach club and hosts one of Europe’s best golf courses. A complete resort package executed at a very high level.

Marbella Club

A classic that still feels relevant. It’s bigger than most people expect, but somehow manages to feel intimate. Right in the centre of Marbella yet remarkably restful. The standards are high in every area - food, service, beach club - and that’s why it continues to be a magnet for top celebrities and repeat guests alike.

Madrid

Four Seasons Madrid

Home to one of Spain’s largest urban spas and some of the biggest entry-level rooms in the city. You’re in the heart of the capital, with top-tier service, chic design and killer views from the rooftop restaurant. The hotel is also home to around 1,500 pieces of art by Spanish artists. According to The World’s Best 50 Hotels, this is currently the best hotel in Spain - and it’s easy to see why.

Rosewood Villa Magna

The gold standard for a Madrid base. Located on Paseo de la Castellana, it’s walking distance to the city’s best boutiques, museums and galleries. The concierge team knows Madrid inside out - decades of lived experience rather than scripted suggestions. If you’ve maxed out on tapas and want something different, Tse Yang’s dim sum and crispy Peking duck are a recommendation in their own right.

San Sebastián & The Basque Country

Nobu San Sebastián

The best-located luxury hotel in La Concha Bay. Stylish rooms and suites blend Basque craftsmanship with contemporary Japanese sophistication. If you want to be in the centre of it all, beach, pintxos and city energy, this is a go-to.

Akelarre

Excellence, innovation and avant-garde precision define Akelarre. Perched above the coastline, this feels more like a destination than a hotel, the kind of place you build your trip around. Perfect for food lovers and design aficionados alike.

Ibiza

Six Senses Ibiza

The perfect hotel in Ibiza for anyone actively avoiding the party island. Located in the north of the island, this is Ibiza at its most peaceful. Wellness-leaning, restorative and consistently well executed. It’s not about nightlife; it’s about R&R you’ll happily return to year after year.

Petunia Ibiza

One of the more refined Beaumier properties. Quiet, elevated, and with front-row views of the magical Es Vedrà. If you want Ibiza beauty and tranquillity without the noise, this is a very strong choice.

OKU Ibiza

Unbelievable value in Ibiza’s west. Cool but not try-hard, with design that feels fresh and relaxed. The location means easy access to fantastic beaches and sunsets. It’s that rare hotel that genuinely balances fun and relaxation.

Spain’s luxury hotel landscape is impressively deep, but these are the ones that stand out year after year for service, setting, design and experience. Whether you’re looking to fly and flop, island-hop, or city-explore, this shortlist will reliably elevate your trip.
