Kenya: My Favourite Luxury Hotels & Lodges

Kenya remains one of Africa’s most compelling luxury safari destinations.
Few countries deliver such a complete experience within a single itinerary: characterful city stays, extraordinary wildlife encounters, vast dramatic landscapes, and beautifully relaxed coastal escapes. While Kenya offers no shortage of exceptional properties, certain hotels and lodges consistently stand out.
These are the places I genuinely rate and recommend.

Nairobi
Giraffe Manor
Giraffe Manor is Nairobi’s most iconic overnight experience, set within a beautifully preserved 1930s manor where resident Rothschild giraffes famously wander up to the windows at breakfast. With just 12 rooms spread across the Historic Manor and Garden Manor, the experience feels intimate, charming, and deliberately exclusive. It is less a traditional hotel stay and more a uniquely memorable introduction to Kenya. Very 'Instagrammable' and as a result very busy with people booking months in advance.

Hemingways Nairobi
Hemingways Nairobi offers a polished, calm soft landing in Karen, particularly well suited to travellers wanting space, comfort, and highly dependable service before or after safari. The all-suite layout, generous room sizes, and garden setting create an atmosphere that feels relaxed yet refined. It works exceptionally well for a seamless overnight stop.
The Maasai Mara
Angama Mara
Angama Mara’s defining feature is its extraordinary location, perched high on the Oloololo Escarpment with sweeping views across the Mara plains. Glass-fronted tented suites create the sensation of floating above the landscape, while the experience balances dramatic scenery with highly polished contemporary luxury. It is easily one of the Mara’s most visually striking stays.

Sala’s Camp
Sala’s Camp sits in the quieter southern reaches of the Maasai Mara, where the Sand River and surrounding wilderness create an atmosphere that feels notably more secluded. The classic tented-camp design is complemented by thoughtful modern comforts, delivering a stay that feels authentic, relaxed, and deeply immersive. Wildlife sightings here often feel wonderfully private.
Cottar’s 1920s Camp
Cottar’s 1920s Camp leans fully into old-world safari romance. Vintage-style tents, heritage detailing, and exceptional guiding standards create an experience defined by atmosphere rather than excess. Set within a private conservancy bordering the Mara, the stay feels timeless, elegant, and deeply characterful.
Laikipia & Northern Kenya
Solio Lodge
Solio Lodge remains one of Kenya’s most quietly exceptional safari properties. Set within a private conservancy renowned for its extraordinary rhino sightings, the lodge’s small scale ensures a highly exclusive, wildlife-led experience. The setting feels peaceful, refined, and deeply connected to the landscape.

Sasaab
Sasaab offers a dramatically different safari environment, defined by vast desert-like landscapes, open skies, and a genuine sense of remoteness. Canvas-sided suites with private plunge pools reinforce the connection to the surrounding wilderness. It is a particularly compelling choice for travellers seeking scenery and solitude alongside wildlife.
Coastal Kenya
Alfajiri Villas
Alfajiri Villas deliver one of Kenya’s most refined beach experiences. Three fully staffed private villas create a stay that feels residential, relaxed, and deeply personal rather than hotel-like. It is the perfect post-safari retreat for travellers prioritising privacy, space, and effortless coastal living.

Kenya offers one of Africa’s richest and most rewarding luxury travel experiences. These are the properties that consistently stand out for atmosphere, setting, and overall quality of stay.
