France: My Favourite Luxury Hotels

France arguably sets the benchmark for luxury hotels.
From historic Parisian palaces to Riviera icons, alpine retreats and vineyard estates, the country offers an extraordinary range of experiences. But as with anywhere in Europe, not every five-star hotel delivers the same level of atmosphere, service, or sense of place.
These are the French properties I consistently recommend, trust, and genuinely rate.

Paris
Hotel de Crillon
Few hotels feel more distinctly Parisian than Hotel de Crillon. The interiors strike that rare balance of contemporary sophistication while fully respecting the building’s 18th-century heritage, dating back to 1758.
The location is equally compelling, just minutes from Faubourg Saint-Honoré’s luxury boutiques. Dining at the Michelin-starred L'Écrin remains one of the city’s standout experiences. And for those who appreciate design details, the bathtub in the Karl Lagerfeld suite is carved from a single slab of Carrara marble weighing over two tonnes.
Four Seasons George V
Four Seasons George V remains one of Paris’s most complete luxury hotel experiences.
The property lays claim to one of the largest collections of apartment-style suites in the city, giving guests a genuine sense of residential comfort. Culinary credentials are exceptional, with five Michelin stars spread across three restaurants. The wine cellar, holding over 50,000 bottles, is among the most impressive in Europe.
Several suites overlook the Eiffel Tower, while the hotel’s history includes hosting The Beatles’ iconic pillow fight photoshoot.

Maison Barrière Vendôme
An intimate Parisian retreat positioned perfectly between Place Vendôme and the Tuileries Garden.
With just 26 rooms, suites, and apartments, Maison Barrière Vendôme feels refreshingly personal. Each room is individually designed, inspired by iconic women, with bold yet elegant colour contrasts. This is Paris luxury on a more discreet, residential scale.
Le Fantaisie
Le Fantaisie offers a very different Paris experience.
Inspired by the neighbourhood’s historic market gardens, the hotel brings an unexpected sense of greenery to the 9th arrondissement. As one of the few five-star hotels in Paris with both a full garden and expansive rooftop bar, it delivers something genuinely unique.
Particularly well suited to travellers who already know Paris and want a location that feels slightly less predictable.
The French Riviera
Airelles Saint-Tropez, Château de la Messardière
One of the Riviera’s most visually dramatic resorts.
Perched above Saint-Tropez, Château de la Messardière delivers scale, views, and a surprisingly strong family offering. The kids club is excellent, while the private beach club includes reserved sunbeds for guests.
Recently gaining even more attention as one of the filming locations for The White Lotus.

AREV Saint-Tropez
AREV captures a more nostalgic vision of Riviera glamour.
The atmosphere leans toward old-school luxury, with check-in feeling more like a warm welcome into a private residence than a traditional hotel arrival. Set within fragrant gardens just a short stroll from the village centre, the property feels calm yet perfectly placed.
The hotel’s signature colourful Méharis add a playful but stylish touch when exploring Saint-Tropez.
Hotel du Couvent (Nice)
One of the Riviera’s most interesting recent openings.
Once a convent, now a beautifully restored retreat in Nice’s Old Town. Hôtel du Couvent deliberately avoids Riviera excess in favour of understated character. Cloistered gardens, underground Roman baths, and a strong focus on local produce define the experience.
Rooms are simple yet stylish, layered with antiques and texture. A refreshingly different take on Côte d’Azur luxury.
Maybourne Riviera
A strikingly modern addition to the Riviera landscape.
The views are extraordinary, with sightlines stretching across Monaco, France, and Italy. Every room and suite features a private balcony, reinforcing the hotel’s connection to its setting.

Lily of the Valley
One of the Riviera’s most compelling modern resorts.
Located just twenty minutes from Saint-Tropez, Lily of the Valley blends Philippe Starck’s design with a strong wellness focus. Uninterrupted sea views, a beach club, and restaurants centred on local, vegan, and organic cuisine define the experience.
Service levels are notably warm, helped by a hands-on General Manager who maintains a highly personal guest experience.
Château Saint-Martin & Spa
A countryside retreat with deep Riviera heritage.
Once a Knights Templar castle, Château Saint-Martin balances historic charm with contemporary refinement. The hilltop setting delivers sweeping Mediterranean views, while Le Saint-Martin’s Michelin-starred dining remains a highlight.
The wine cellars, holding more than 20,000 bottles, and the expansive Spa Saint-Martin by La Prairie reinforce its classic luxury credentials.
Provence
Crillon le Brave
Crillon le Brave embodies the romantic, slow-paced appeal of Provence.
Set across a series of historic stone houses, the hotel feels woven into the village itself. The atmosphere is intimate, the views across Mont Ventoux are exceptional, and the overall experience feels relaxed yet refined.
Ideal for travellers seeking understated Provençal charm rather than grand resort scale.

Villa La Coste
Villa La Coste offers something entirely different.
Positioned on a 600-acre biodynamic estate with vineyards, sculpture gardens, and contemporary architecture, the hotel attracts a distinctly design-conscious crowd. Suites feature private terraces overlooking vines and valleys, while the spa reinforces the property’s restorative focus.
A very polished interpretation of modern countryside luxury.
The Alps
L’Apogée Courchevel
One of Courchevel’s most polished luxury addresses.
Ski-in, ski-out access, Palace status, and chalet-style design executed at an exceptionally high level. Facilities include a La Prairie spa, cigar lounge, ski room, and self-contained chalets for groups.
Courchevel glamour done properly.
Airelles Courchevel
Airelles delivers theatrical, highly attentive alpine luxury.
Private piste access, ski butlers, fleet of Rolls Royces, and a remarkably high staff-to-guest ratio. The atmosphere is indulgent without feeling stiff, making it particularly strong for families as well as traditional Courchevel clientele.
Fouquet’s Courchevel
Fouquet’s Courchevel delivers a more contemporary take on alpine luxury.
Perfectly positioned on the Bellecôte slopes, the ski-in, ski-out access is genuinely seamless. The design leans modern and polished rather than overtly chalet-traditional, giving the hotel a slightly fresher energy compared with some of Courchevel’s more theatrical properties.
The spa is a standout feature, centred around a superb indoor pool that feels particularly welcome after a long day on the mountain. Dining is equally strong, with Loulou bringing a lively, social atmosphere that balances the hotel’s otherwise calm, refined feel.
A very well-rounded choice for travellers wanting serious comfort without excessive formality.

Wine Regions & Countryside Escapes
Les Sources de Cheverny
A charming Loire Valley escape defined by relaxed, rural luxury.
The estate blends period castle rooms with contemporary chalet suites, creating a stay that feels both characterful and comfortable. Cycling routes, château visits, and vinotherapy spa treatments shape the experience.
An excellent countryside counterpoint to France’s larger hotel icons.
Sources de Caudalie
One of France’s most distinctive countryside spa hotels.
Set within a historic Bordeaux winery, the property revolves around vinotherapy, wine experiences, and restorative spa programmes. The setting, surrounded by forest and a serene lake, reinforces its retreat-like appeal.
Dining at the two-Michelin-starred La Grand'Vigne completes a remarkably cohesive experience.

France offers one of the world’s deepest luxury hotel landscapes, but these are the properties that consistently stand out for atmosphere, setting, and overall experience.
